First held in 1905 for men, 1922 for women, it is now played on hard courts, in mid-end January, at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia.
(2012 is 108th year for men; 91st year for women.) The Aussie has stopped winners of the Grand Slam, or Career Slams, 13 times (through 2012). (The most recent example is Rafael Nadal in 2010.) By her win in 2003, Serena Williams joined the elite rank of women who have won all four Grand Slam events in their career, becoming the 9th member of the group, replacing Steffi Graf as the most recent new member from 1988. |

First held in 1925, it is now played on clay courts, from May-June, at Roland Garros in Paris.
(2012 is 88th year for both men and women.) The French has stopped winners of the Grand Slam, or Career Slams, 21 times (through 2012). (This happened three times for Roger Federer in 2004, 2006, and 2007; and for Novak Djokovic in 2011, and 2012.) By her win in 2012, Maria Sharapova joined the elite rank of women who have won all four Grand Slam events in their career, becoming the 10th member of the group, replacing Serena Williams as the most recent new member from 2003. By his win in 2009, Roger Federer joined the elite rank of men who have won all four Grand Slam events in their career, becoming the 6th member of the group, replacing Andre Agassi as the most recent new member from 1999. By his win in 1999, Andre Agassi joined the elite rank of men who have won all four Grand Slam events in their career, becoming the 5th member of the group, replacing Roy Emerson as the most recent new member from 1964. |
